Señora Chronicles 📖
Our latest Señora Chronicles guest is second gen Cubana 🇨🇺 Barbara Caver, whose memoir A Little Piece of Cuba: A Journey To Become Cubana-Americana traces her transformation after a life-changing trip to Cuba - a journey that redefined her understanding of identity and belonging. Check out her guest blog post here.
Have you ever heard of a heritage trip? It’s when you go to your homeland to explore your roots.
Caver truly hopes that everyone can start to explore their own personal history and heritage through travel. Here are some her her tips:
1. Follow Your Curiosity About Yourself
Start by asking questions about your roots — Where did your family come from? What stories, foods, or traditions have been passed down? Your curiosity is the best compass. Even if you don’t know exactly what you’ll find, trust that the journey will reveal parts of yourself you haven’t yet seen.
2. Embrace the Unknown (and the Fear That Comes With It)
It’s natural to feel nervous before visiting a homeland or ancestral place, especially if you’re unsure what to expect. Lean into that uncertainty — it’s part of the self-discovery process. Growth often begins where comfort ends.
3. Keep an Open Mind About What “Heritage” Means
Culture is more than language or geography. It’s storytelling, shared values, rituals, and the ways we connect with others. Be ready to see your heritage as a living, evolving mosaic, not a checklist. There’s no one “right” way to belong.
Did you know the señoras of the past used to make their own skincare? That’s right, before coporations like Max Factor and Revlon ate Latin America, rouge was made from beets, shampoo from herbs, and rosewater was de rigueur. In the book, you can even grab a recipe that was gifted to us from Herbal Academy that was actually likely also made by your great grandmother. Read more about Latin American señora’s routines in our book Radical Señora Era, now a certified Amazon bestseller. 🍂🧣🧦🍁🥧
