Señora Q&A

We have a lot of amigas (that means you) who love making your home and garden beautiful, and also are also entrepreneurs. That’s why we were so excited to hear from Monica Nassif, founder of Mrs. Meyers cleaning products, and author of the new book, '“I Bottled My Mother: The Mrs. Meyer’s Story -Grit, Grime and Growing a Business.” Monica is the oldest of nine kids, and her mother, Thelma, taught her how to cook, clean, sew, garden, raise kids and take care of the home - and she was the inspiration for her famous brand.

Monica gave us her top five cleaning tips for when you’re in a rut:

  1. Clean as you cook. I’m always in the kitchen cooking, so I try to keep my dishes and utensils clean as I go along. This way, there’s not such a big mess after a meal.

  2. Teach your children how to clean. At an early age, children can bus dishes, load the dishwasher, line up their shoes, and learn to keep their bedrooms organized. Yes, in the beginning, it takes more time to coach a youngster, yet after a few weeks, your workload will lighten because now you have help.

  3. Break down cleaning and laundry into manageable sessions.  I tried to keep laundry going through the week rather than wait for ten loads over the weekend. Then you have time on Saturday or Sunday to clean for a few hours.

  4. Focus on the kitchen. Since we are always cooking, I made sure to wipe down or vacuum the kitchen floor and spray the sink after dinner. I keep a bottle of Mrs. Meyer’s Countertop Spray under all sinks in the house for a quick refresh. (And remember to start the dishwasher—something I usually forget.) I love waking up to a clean sink.

  5. Reset your living area every evening. It only takes a few minutes to fluff the pillows, restack the magazines, take dishes to the kitchen, and restore the remotes. You’ll thank yourself in the morning.

This is basically ranchito meets Italian design - think bees, wildflowers, and gold honeycomb patterns on those iconic retro appliances. They're wildly popular because they make your kitchen look like a styled Pinterest board while actually toasting your bread perfectly, and the Williams Sonoma exclusivity gives major "treat yourself" energy.
